Can you say – I SUPPORT BURNLEY?

Last updated : 05 August 2002 By Tony Scholes

I’m sure the answer for most of you is a definite YES and Clarets Mad are now giving you the opportunity to publicly state I SUPPORT BURNLEY.

The more Burnley supporters who commit themselves then the better the atmosphere will be at the Turf, the better the support will be for the players and together we can do our bit to keep the Clarets heading in the right direction.

On the day Stan Ternent took over as manager just over four years ago he spoke about togetherness being of the utmost importance during the press conference. For most of the time and from most of us that togetherness is there.

You are not expected to agree with everything that goes on but there is a time and a place for giving it 100% support and a time and a place for criticising. To sign up and publicly say I SUPPORT BURNLEY then you need to agree to the following five pledges;

1.

I AM A SUPPORTER OF BURNLEY FOOTBALL CLUB

2.

I WILL NOT BOO OR BE ABUSIVE TO EITHER AN INDIVIDUAL PLAYER OR THE TEAM WHILST AT TURF MOOR OR AN AWAY GROUND

3.

I WILL NOT BEHAVE IN A VIOLENT OR DISRUPTIVE MANNER AT ANY TIME

4.

I WILL NOT USE RACIST WORDS OR BEHAVIOUR AT ANY TIME

5.

I WILL SUPPORT AND ENCOURAGE THE TEAM AT ALL TIMES

Number 1 has been included so that it involves those who don’t attend matches but support the general principles behind the idea.

Number 2 is possibly the trickiest of them. We are not saying that you should never criticise but that you should not do so in a way that might have a detrimental effect on the team whilst we are playing.

Number 3 speaks for itself but this is football and sometimes passions run high often caused by the acts of others but what we are saying is whatever the provocation never let yourself become involved in behaviour that reflects badly on Burnley Football Club.

Number 4 will not be a problem to the vast majority of Burnley fans but even if you do have racist views please don’t bring them to Turf Moor where they are not wanted.

Number 5 is a plea to get behind the team no matter what the circumstances. The Clarets need your support just as much, in fact more, when we are 2 down rather that 2 up.

Football fans all over the country have no doubt witnessed the behaviour that we are trying to get rid of but rather like the bully in the playground the individuals concerned can be difficult to confront. Our suggestion is that if someone is behaving in a way that contravenes the I SUPPORT BURNLEY pledges you could simply say to them in as non-confrontational way as possible ‘I SUPPORT BURNLEY’. The hope is that in time the message will be clear to all.

If you want to criticise about this player or that, about a performance, or in fact any aspect of Burnley Football Club then go ahead and do so. It is so much better to do it after the game though, over a pint maybe, or you could join our message board. A new look message board will be with us for the start of the new season.

A new section of the site entitled I Support Burnley has been set up for this and can be found in the Players and Fans section, just beneath Worldwide Clarets with Ex-Clarets moving into the Clarets Extra section. Those who sign up will see their names in this section.

Hopefully soon there could also be some I SUPPORT BURNLEY merchandise starting with a pin badge carrying the logo shown at the top of this article. That would enable us to make a bit of money for the club too during these difficult financial times.

So can you say I SUPPORT BURNLEY?

If so just click HERE and sign up.
