Cambridge release Tom Cowan

Last week Bradford City revealed their list early with six players told they had no futures at Valley Parade and the same scenario is expected at many clubs up and down the country over the next few weeks.

This morning one ex-Claret has been given such bad news, Tom Cowan at already relegated Cambridge United. It was not unexpected and Tom not long ago was trying to get them to pay him up and spent a month on loan at Peterborough United.

He joined Cambridge in the summer of 2000 after playing four games for them on loan for the Clarets. Last season he was a regular in the first team and played 41 of the 46 league games but this season he has hardly been considered. He made four appearances in late September/early October and then didn't play first team football again until he went to Peterborough for a month. There he played five games before returning to Cambridge where he went straight back into the side for just one game.

There was to be just one more appearance a month later where he scored the opening goal in a 2-2 draw with Bournemouth and now at the age of 32 he finds himself looking for a new club. He has played just one league game short of 300 in his career with eight clubs in Scotland and England.

Tom Cowan is the first ex-Claret looking for a new club and there are certain to be more over these next few weeks.
