Cahill wins second cap in England win

Last updated : 08 February 2005 By Tony Scholes

England were 1-0 up after just four minutes when KKMC defender Chinedum Onouha tucked in a rebound after the keeper had failed to hold a header from Cherno Samba and they were on top for the rest of the first half with former Claret Richard Chaplow pulling the strings on his first start at this level.

It was still all England after the break against a Russian side that hardly forced Cahill into any problems all night and Charlton’s Lloyd Sam, on as a substitute doubled the lead. Just before the end it really should have been three after Bradley Wright-Phillips, in front of his dad Ian, failed to beat the Russian keeper after being put through by Chappy.

A good night all round and well done to both Gary and Richard on winning further international honours.

The England team was: Luke Steele (Coventry, on loan from Man Utd), David Raven (Liverpool), Gary Borrowdale (Crystal Palace), Ross Gardner (Nott’m Forest), Gary Cahill (Burnley, on loan from Aston Villa), Chinedum Onouha (KKMC), Cherno Samba (Cadiz), Richard Chaplow (West Brom), Daniel Graham (Middlesbrough), Neil Kilkenny (Oldham, on loan from Birmingham), Lee Croft (Oldham, on loan from KKMC).

Substitutions:

45: Simon Francis (Sheffield Utd) for Raven

45: Bradley Wright-Phillips (KKMC) for Croft

57: Liam Fontaine (Fulham) for Onouha

65: Stacy Long (Charlton) for Kilkenny

75: Lloyd Sam (Charlton) for Samba
