Byfield in Burnley link

Byfield was released by Bristol City last week after the south west club were beaten by Hull at Wembley in the Championship play off final. He signed off with a substitute appearance at the new national stadium, replacing Nick Carle.

He'd joined Bristol City as a free agent in August 2007 and after scoring on his debut at Coventry he scored his first Ashton Gate goals against the Clarets when he replaced Brian Wilson. He netted twice after we'd gone 1-0 up in a game that ended 2-2. It was hardly a surprise, he's made something of a habit of scoring against us and it wasn't even the first time he'd scored twice in a game against us having come on as a substitute.

His first ever goal came for Preston when he scored their fourth in a 4-1 win against us at Deepdale in 1998 on a day when we were so poor the result flattered us. It was four years before he scored another goal against us and this time it was for Rotherham. On that occasion he came on for Richard Barker with the Millers already 4-1 up. He scored twice as we threw one in with Rotherham winning 6-2.

In August 2004 he scored what proved to be the winner for Gillingham at the Turf on the day that Steve Cotterill suffered his first home defeat as Burnley boss. It was also the day he had a rather public falling out with referee Richard Beeby. That took his goals against us to four and the two at Ashton Gate makes it eight.

Having started his career with Aston Villa and made his debut in the Premiership at Leeds in a 1-1 draw in 1997 he's now played for a total of eleven clubs. Now aged 31 he hardly fits the profile of the player Owen Coyle is looking to bring in and I would suspect a move for Byfield is very unlikely, although at least it would stop him scoring against us.
