Bury for Clarets in the Carling Cup

Last updated : 13 June 2008 By Tony Scholes

It will be Owen Coyle's first ever game as a manager in this competition and by coincidence he faces exactly the same game as both Stan Ternent and Steve Cotterill did in their first cup games in charge of the Clarets.

Playing Bury in this competition is nothing rare and this will be our fifth meeting and to date it is all square with Burnley having won through twice and Bury twice and all four of them have, as this one, been in the first round.

The first of them was in 1982/83 following our promotion and having won the first leg 5-3 at Gigg Lane we ran out easy 8-4 winners on aggregate. It has been a tie with plenty of goals and three years later, with Martin Buchan in charge of the Clarets and Martin Dobson leading Bury, it was the turn of the Shakers to win this time by 6-5 on aggregate.

Our next meeting was in 1998/99 season but after a creditable 1-1 draw at Gigg Lane we took something of a hammering at home going down 4-1 in a game that saw Gordon Armstrong come on as a sub and score for Neil Warnock's side.

More recently it was Robbie Blake who netted twice as we went through 3-2 in a season that saw us reach round four after going on to beat Wolves and Aston Villa before going out to Spurs.

This season's game will be played in the first midweek of the season and is almost certain to be Tuesday 12th August. Should Burnley win we would require one club who finished last season to go out to enable us to be seeded in the next round.
