Wayne Thomas - sent off as Hartlepool won at the Turf
The first round of the competition has been moved back into the first midweek of the season for the first time in four years, on that occasion we beat Chesterfield on penalties after dominated the 120 minutes of a goalless draw.

Last season saw us go out to Hartlepool, losing 1-0 from a penalty that brought an end to the evening for Wayne Thomas when he was sent off by referee Carl Boyeson. It was the first time we'd gone out at the first hurdle since 2001 when Rushden & Diamonds also beat us at the Turf as the competition dropped its two legged early rounds.

As always this season the draw is seeded and on a regional basis. All the Championship clubs are seeded which means we are guaranteed to be drawn against one of the eighteen teams in the North unseeded section. Of those clubs there are only four we have never met previously in this competition, they are Accrington, Darlington, Macclesfield and league newcomers Morecambe.

The groups for the draw, which is to be made at 10:00 a.m. are:

North - Seeded: Barnsley, Blackpool, Burnley, Carlisle, Doncaster, Hull, League One Leeds, Leicester, Nottingham Forest, Oldham, Port Vale, Preston, Scunthorpe, Sheffield United, Sheffield Wednesday, Stoke, Tranmere, Wolves
