Burnley link with Sligo continues

Sligo Rovers have been in existence since 1928 and are run as a co-operative and owned by the people of Sligo. Their ground, named the Showground, is held in trust and can never be sold to allow the club to always play there.

In 1995 manager Lawrie Sanchez left to return to Wimbledon as a coach but recommended his former team mate Steve Cotterill. He had a successful period in Ireland, reaching third place in the league and taking them to the cup final before returning to England to manage his home town club Cheltenham Town.

The future Burnley manager was replaced by a former Burnley manager in Jimmy Mullen, but his stay was short lived and he soon returned home for family reasons, but just a couple of years after that former Claret Tommy Cassidy became manager. His stay was far from successful and during his time there the club were relegated.

They've been looking for a new manager recently and just three days ago turned to another ex-Claret, this time Paul Cook who has been out of work since losing his job at Southport earlier in the season. Cooky has been given a contract with Sligo until the end of the 2009 season and got underway with a draw against bottom of the table Waterford on Saturday.

Sligo are currently in eighth place in the table, their second back in the top division following promotion in 2005. Cook will be hoping to at least equal last season's fifth place finish.
