Burnley launch investigation into offensive flag

The flag was displayed in the away end prior to the home game against Walsall but was removed following complaints from Burnley fans in both the Bob Lord and the Jimmy McIlroy Stands.

The club’s Marketing Manager Edoardo Abis told us this morning, "Burnley Football Club is aware of the incident that occurred on Saturday in the Cricket Field Stand. We are currently undertaking an internal investigation and more will be said once that investigation has taken place."

There will obviously be more to come from Turf Moor once the investigation is complete whilst yesterday we received the following statement from Walsall Football Club,

WALSALL FC Chief Executive Roy Whalley today condemned reports that a Walsall supporter had taken a swastika banner to Burnley on Saturday.

Whalley commented: "At a time when so many good things are happening at this club, why do a small number of morons have to go out of their way to spoil things for everyone else.

"In a week when we have announced a major new sponsorship, when we have a new stand nearing completion, a positive set of accounts has been released, a hotel application submitted, the team are producing some sterling displays - all positive news, and good for the club - then what happens, some idiot decides to fly the swastika at Burnley.

"I am disgusted. An entire generation of Walsall people, many of whom died fighting the evils of fascism, and preserving the rights of freedom of speech, for deadheads like this to abuse.

"Let me make clear. We shall be demonstrating our support for the 'National Anti-Racism Week of Action in Football' on Saturday.

"Walsall FC is a broad church. We welcome the participation of all sections of the community, whatever their cultural background, race, creed or colour, whether as players, staff or supporters.

"If there are any people out there who disagree with this stance, then please stay away from Bescot Stadium and all Walsall FC matches.

"We shall work with West Midlands Police to take the sternest possible action against those who behave in a way that brings disgrace on the club and the town."

A number of supporters have also contacted us on the matter including some who in fact complained to stewards in the home areas. A Walsall fan, sat close to the flag, also told us that the stewards were weak and that some of the activity of some Walsall fans would have been far more severely punished at the Bescot Stadium.

It has now been confirmed that nobody was either ejected or arrested for the displaying of this flag.

Clarets Mad would wish to thank both clubs for their early responses and to Burnley Football Club for carrying out an investigation following an incident that it is hoped is never ever seen again.
