Burnley in Weir link

He joined Rangers in the January transfer window in 2007 and has been a regular in their side since. He recently lined up in the UEFA Cup Final against Zenith St. Peterseburg and this was just one of 61 appearances this season for the 38 year-old.

It now appears that he won't be a regular during next season with Walter Smith looking to bring in a new central defender to play alongside Spaniard Carlos Cuellar and it is thought that Weir, whose family still live in Lancashire, would prefer to move on for first team football.

He started his career with Falkirk and then played for Hearts before Walter Smith took him to Everton in February 2002 for £200,000. In eight years at Goodison Park he played over 250 games for Everton before Smith again stepped in to take him back to Scotland and to Rangers.

In a season and a half he's played no less than 78 games for the SPL runners up but it now looks as if he wants first team football he'll need to move on. The Scottish press have revealed that Owen Coyle is interested in signing Weir and that the player who has been capped 61 times by his country would seriously consider an offer.

Coyle said recently that he was looking for younger players and there would be no short term fixes at Burnley, that we were building a side for the long term. But he's certainly not averse to trying to bring in more experienced players as the offer to Andrew Cole showed.
