It has been thought for some time that Brown, who enjoyed a five match spell as caretaker before the appointment of Sam Allardyce, was ready to take the plunge and look for a manager’s job.

The 44-year-old from South Shields played over 600 league games in a career that started with Hartlepool and also say him play for Halifax and Bolton before ending his career with Blackpool.

He worked for Allardyce as coach at Blackpool during the 1995/96 season when they reached the play offs.

Brown moved back to Bolton and stepped up to run the team when Colin Todd left in 1999 and they won four games out of five. He wanted the job but missed out to Allardyce who promptly offered him the assistant’s job.

He’s been there ever since and is now ready for a new challenge. But that does not fit in with Kilby’s comments last week that he would not offer the job to a rookie and no matter how much coaching he has done he has no real management experience.
