Brown gets Preston job

It is very much a change of direction for Preston who have in recent years promoted from within and also appointed young track suit managers. Nothing could be further from the truth with his appointment, Craig Brown will have celebrated his 62nd birthday by the time the new season starts.

He started on his coaching and managerial career some 28 years ago with the position of assistant manager at Motherwell but then three years later became manager of Clyde. This was only a part time appointment and he was there for ten years whilst working as a primary school teacher.

Out of the blue in 1986 he returned to full time football and took up the position of assistant manager of the Scotland team working for then manager Andy Roxburgh, eventually succeeding him in 1993 initially as caretaker. He was in charge for Euro 1996 and the World Cup in 1998 but after failing to qualify for this year's World Cup he resigned in October 2001 to be eventually replaced by Bertie Vogts.

Today though at the age of 61 he has taken over as manager of Preston North End and has signed a four year contract. Despite the occasional comment from this site I am sure he will find the club in a good state, to be fair Moyes had done a good job.

The appointment though does have to be a gamble for someone who has been out of club management for some eighteen years but he won through against four other candidates believed to be Kenny Dalglish, Mark Hughes, Steve McMahon and Kelham O'Hanlon.
