Bristol City striker being linked with the Clarets

There has been some speculation about new players here and there but generally following the collapse of ITV Digital and the World Cup there has been very little to report. Finally though another couple of names have been thrown into the hat as potential signings and here we look at one of them despite the fact that it is a very unlikely signing.

The player in question is Bristol City striker Tony Thorpe who is available on a Bosman free transfer. He has chosen to leave Ashton Gate and already Sheffield Wednesday and his former club Luton Town have been linked with him.

Presumably the Burnley link is due to the fact that he came close to joining us in January 2000. The club announced that he was coming on a month's loan on Monday 10th January but would sign on the Friday. He was training with us but by Wednesday he was back in Bristol and the deal was off.

At the time it was said that it was a problem between the two clubs and Stan said he hoped to bring him in at a later date. That later date might well have arrived but the suggestion was some seventeen months ago that Stan was not over impressed with him and decided against taking him even for a month.

If that is the case then it is not likely that Stan will be signing him now but he is looking at other strikers with so much conflicting news on David Johnson.

Stan said only last week that he would still like to sign Johnson but there have been reports of Leicester offering £1 million for a player who, according to his agent back in March, is available for nothing. Whether Forest want a fee or not is not clear but certainly nobody is daft enough to go in and offer £1 million for him when surely Forest will get him go for next to nothing.

He looked odds on to become a Claret before the loss of the television money but whether Thorpe is the alternative is questionable.
