Boyeson gets his third Burnley game

Last updated : 22 August 2006 By Tony Scholes
The last time we saw this particular referee was back in March 2005 in a 2-0 defeat at Wolves, when he amazingly saw Paul Ince butt John McGreal for which he yellow carded both players. It was an astonishing decision made worse when Johnny Mac was pulled up for a foul towards the end of the game and sent off.

Almost a year earlier, in a vital relegation battle against Watford, he had something of a nightmare although it was our own pitiful performance that saw us go down 3-2 to the Hornets and not his poor refereeing. I think it is fair to say that both his Burnley games have seen us turn in performances close to being the worst in their respective seasons.

Boyeson doesn't go overboard with yellow cards, 92 in 31 games last season at just under three per game, but he did hand out no fewer than twelve red cards taking his red card total to 36 since joining the league list at the beginning of the 2002/03 season.

He was a referee making progress and getting a number of Championship games but that's all changed in the last year and the last time he refereed a league game at our level was the game between Stoke and Plymouth in March 2005.

His 2006/07 season got underway just this weekend when he was in charge of the League One fixture between Millwall and Oldham at the Den. He handed out three yellow cards in that game, one to Richard Shaw of Millwall, the other two to Marc Tierney and Ritchie Wellens of Oldham.

He will be assisted tonight by Danny Roberts and Colin Harwood (both from Greater Manchester) and David Unsworth (Lancashire) will be fourth official.
