Boyeson and we are looking for better

Last updated : 15 March 2005 By Tony Scholes

That was the Easter 3-2 home defeat against Watford when the east Yorkshire based referee made damn sure he was the centre of attention from start to finish in a dreadful performance.

Thankfully he didn’t have any major decisions to make so was unable to affect the result with his decisions on a day when Watford were head and shoulders better than the Clarets.

It is his only Burnley game to date so tonight can only be his best performance in a Burnley match, he couldn’t possibly be worse than he was a year ago.

Boyeson has clearly made something of an impression and after moving up a step last season he has found himself used considerably less at Championship level this season. This will be just his fourth game in the Championship with the rest involving teams in the lower leagues.

He has calmed down somewhat with his cards and in 29 games this season has handed out 79 yellow and 7 red cards. The yellow cards couldn’t be more evenly split with 40 to home team players and 39 to away team players whilst the split on the red cards is 3-4.

I suspect, unless he has changed, that he will be noticed far too often tonight as he looks to take centre stage. We can only hope he’s changed.

He wil be assisted tonight by Carl Dunn (Staffordshire) and Will Ramsay (West Midlands).
