Boyd becomes a Claret

Boyd, who has won two caps for Scotland, is often listed as a winger but himself says he's comfortable playing in a number of positions and probably would choose playing in the hole behind the front players.

The 28-year-old started as a youngster with Charlton but wasn't offered a professional deal and he dropped into non-league football with Stevenage Borough. His performances there eventually persuaded Peterborough to sign him in 2007.

They were a League Two club at the time and Boyd was a member of the side that won two promotions that saw them reach the Championship just as we were leaving it in 2009. With Peterborough going straight down he moved on loan to Nottingham Forest and was expected to sign for them that summer, but nothing materialised and he returned to London Road.

One year later there were strong indications that Eddie Howe was trying to sign him for Burnley. With Chris Eagles sold to Bolton the headlines suggested both Boyd and Keith Treacy were on their way to Turf Moor.

Barry Fry confirmed we'd made offers, one including Ross Wallace, but Burnley vehemently denied they had made any sort of offer for Boyd.

He remained at Peterborough until the end of the January transfer window in 2013 when a bizarre rejection caused ructions between Posh and Forest. He was signing for Forest, he'd passed a medical, but then they pulled out of the deal citing a failed eye test.

He returned, once more, to London Road and played in the 2-2 draw against the Clarets but very soon afterwards he joined Hull on an emergency loan with the deal to be made permanent in the summer.

He went straight into the Hull side, scoring four goals in 12 starts as they clinched promotion to the Premier League. Last season he made 29 Premier League appearances for Hull, although only nine of them were starts. He twice scored, once in a 6-0 home thrashing of Fulham and then the only goal of the game as they beat Swansea at the KC Stadium.

During his time at Hull he's also won call ups for Scotland and has, to date, made two appearances for Gordon Strachan's team.

Whether the Howe move for him in 2011 was fact or part of Fry's fiction we'll never know, but he has now become a Burnley player just over three years on.

Hull manager Steve Bruce said yesterday: "If all professionals were like George Boyd my job would be easy."

He's also said: "George has been a wonderful player for us, but he wants to play regular football and thinks he has a better chance to play regular football on a three year contract. I would like to wish him well."
