Boothroyd in at Watford

They said they wanted a younger manager, one with new ideas, and so we knew it was hardly likely to another comeback for Graham Taylor. Instead they have turned to Adrian Boothroyd.

Who you might say? Boothroyd has until this season worked with youth academies and was academy director at Peterborough, Norwich and West Brom before moving on to Elland Road this season.

That was a step up for him and he has been first team coach at Leeds, working with Kevin Blackwell and Sam Ellis. That has come to an end though after less than a year and he has this morning accepted the post at Watford, taking over from Ray Lewington.

Bradford born, defender Boothroyd started his playing career with Huddersfield before Bristol Rovers paid £30,000 for him. From there it was Hearts, Mansfield and Peterborough but injury brought his career to an end in March 1997 at the age of 26.

That was playing for Peterborough, with former Burnley loan player Louie Donowa coming on as a sub to replace him in what was his last game.

From there he moved into coaching under Barry Fry and worked with the youngsters in the academy at Posh, an academy that produced players such as Simon Davies (Spurs) and Matthew Etherington (now West Ham).

Now he is at Watford and will be preparing his side for his first match in charge at the Turf – we can’t wish him well.
