The current United manager Ferguson had to cry off because of illness but didn’t let the audience down by arranging for the former World Cup winner Charlton to attend in his place.

In a packed marquee at Turf Moor both Charlton and Alastair Campbell both spoke well with Campbell’s speech described as long and passionate, words from a true Claret.

There was lots more money raised in the auction with the top priced item being a framed 1962 Cup final photo along with ticket, programme, autographs and rosette. It brought in £3,500.

Editor of the Daily Sport Tony Livesey, another passionate Claret, paid £2,000 for a signed Manchester United shirt.

There were also messages of support from some of Campbell’s former colleagues in Westminster with Prime Minister Tony Blair pleased to hear that he had finally found something to do with his life.

Those letters of support came from Plymouth supporter and registered player Michael Foot, Margaret Beckett, Lord Callaghan, Neil Kinnock and Tony Blair. To see their letters of support just click on their names below.

All in all it was reported as a good night with more money raised for Burnley Football Club.
