Black and Moore are front runners

They are Eric Black, recently sacked at Coventry, and current Rotherham boss Ronnie Moore. Both are expected to be on Barry Kilby’s list and it would come as no surprise if one of them was to be the choice to replace Stan Ternent.

Black took over at Coventry only last December from Gary McAllister who left for personal reasons. They were on a run of eight league games without a win but he immediately brought that to an end with a 2-1 win against the Clarets at the Turf courtesy of goals from Patrick Suffo and a Paul Weller own goal.

To the outsiders he looked to have turned Coventry round and from what looked as though it was going to be a relegation battle he saw them easily into mid-table and saw his side score four goals on three occasions, five goals against Gillingham as well as hitting Walsall for six.

One of those fours came against the Clarets in what was probably our worst performance of the season.

Astonishingly after all that he was sacked with one game left in the season because Coventry’s form was, according to chairman Mike McGinnity, inconsistent.

Ronnie Moore on the other hand has been in charge at Rotherham since the summer of 1997 when he replaced Danny Bergara as manager following the Millers relegation to Division Three.

It took him three years to get them out of the basement division but they won two successive promotions to join us in the First Division in 2001. They were expected to go straight back down but are now looking forward to a fourth successive season in Division One after reaching safety with a 3-0 win against us a week last Saturday.

Moore is the sixth longest serving manager in the league and is under contract at Millmoor. He has shown in the past that he is ready to move on and was keen to talk to Ipswich during the 2002/03 season until it was revealed that the approach was a hoax.

He would certainly know a little bit about one of our current strikers.

It is early days yet, the target is to have someone in place by the end of May. But don’t be surprised if it is one of Eric Black or Ronnie Moore.
