Bill Nicholson dies

At the opening of 'Bill Nicholson Way'
It seems wrong just to name him as a former Spurs manager, he was without doubt their greatest manager and led them to that historic league and cup double in 1961 that so nearly came Burnley’s way a year later.

Burnley and Spurs, for a short time, were without any doubt the two greatest teams in the land. We both won the League Championship and went on to represent the country in the European Cup.

There were big cup ties and some incredible league games between us, including the 4-4 draw at White Hart Lane when we came from four down to earn the point.

Those of us who saw them will never forget those great games during that era with fantastic players on either side, including such as Danny Blanchflower, Dave Mackay, John White and Jimmy Greaves for Spurs.

Bill Nicholson and Spurs will always be remembered in Burnley – he, like or own Harry Potts, was a manager who played the game in the way it should be played. His death is a big loss to the game.

Our thoughts are with Bill Nicholson’s family and with Tottenham Hotspur at this very sad time.
