Beware its card man tomorrow night

In charge tomorrow night is Cheshunt official Paul Taylor and how he loves to make extensive use of both his yellow and red cards. He got off to a quiet start this season, it took him an incredible 39 minutes of his first game before a player saw red. The first to go was Coventry’s Calum Davidson in their 0-0 draw at Brighton a couple of weeks ago. It was a straight red and five other players received yellow cards.

A couple of days ago he took charge of the Colchester v Brentford game and he had a quiet afternoon with only two yellows. Seven yellows and one red in two games compares favourably with his total last season when he waved his yellow card a staggering 131 times in 36 games but also got his red card out 11 times.

His highlight last season had to be the 1st Division game between Bradford and Portsmouth. Nine times he got out his yellow card and twice his red as the game disintegrated into a farce but this was no one off. Just two matches earlier he sent off three and booked seven in the Swindon v Bournemouth game. There were many more games with 5,6 and 7 bookings but after his performance at Bradford in January the red card didn’t come out again all season.

He had a relatively quiet afternoon when he took charge of the Clarets last season in our 2-1 win at Crystal Palace with just four yellow cards, two each, with Tony Grant and Lenny Johnrose getting our two. Lenny was only on the pitch four minutes.

However he has been much more true to form in his previous Burnley games – see below and be warned. All were won though and the most important of those being the last match of the season against Plymouth in 1997/98.

Burnley 2 Tranmere Rovers 1, April 2001 – 7 yellow and one red (Ian Moore, Steve Davis, Mitchell Thomas, Paul Weller).

Burnley 3 Oxford United 2, December 1999 – 6 yellow (Andy Cooke, Micky Mellon).

Burnley 2 Plymouth Argyle 1, May 1998 – 4 yellow (Paul Weller, Mark Winstanley).
