Bennett at the Bescot

Last updated : 09 April 2004 By Tony Scholes

That last game was back in January 1998 in the days of Chris Waddle and a 2-0 defeat at the Priestfield Stadium against Gillingham.

It is somewhat interesting to take a look at the Burnley team that day, it read: Marlon Beresford, Chris Brass, Neil Moore, Lee Howey, Chris Vinnicombe (Paul Smith 52), Gerry Harrison, Mark Ford (Chris Waddle 75), Michael Williams (Glen Little 69), Damian Matthew, Andy Cooke, Paul Barnes.

Andy Cooke was the only Claret booked alongside Gillingham’s Ade Akinbiyi in what proved to be Paul Barnes’ last game for the Clarets.

Onto this season and Bennett is having a quiet enough season which has hit the heights with the Champions League game between Real Madrid and Porto in the San Bernabeu and also seen him officiate at the 2nd Division game between Wycombe and Luton.

In 29 fixtures overall he has handed out 86 yellow cards at just about three per game and added 9 red cards to that. Of those cards 38 yellow have gone to home team players and 43 to away team players whilst with the red cards it is 2-6. To add to that there were five yellow and a red card at the Community Shield match between Arsenal and Manchester United at Cardiff.

Steve Bennett is not one of the most popular referees in the Premiership but hopefully he will have a quiet game tomorrow.

He will be assisted by Roy Burton (Staffordshire) and John Holbrook (Worcestershire).
