Bates takes charge of cup tie

Last updated : 02 January 2009 By Tony Scholes
Bates is one of the longest serving referees on the Football League list and this is his thirteenth season. Should we be worried? Probably the answer to that is yes given our run of results when he's refereed (see below).

But we have rarely had any problems with him and he's already refereed three games since we introduced Rate the Ref and he's as high as eighth place after three very consistent performances.

Earlier this season he was presented with a big problem for our first home game of the season against Ipswich and finally got the game going with him still on the roof. Other than that it has been a quiet season for him and in 21 matches he's handed out just 42 yellow cards and a couple of red cards.

The two players he's sent off are Oldham's Sean Gregan in a 3-3 draw at Hartlepool and Norwich centre half John Kennedy in a 3-2 defeat at Sheffield Wednesday. Of those yellow cards 21 have gone to home team players and 24 to away players.

He's also refereed one QPR game previously this season. That was their 0-0 draw at Swansea. He yellow carded five players in that game, all of them QPR players.

Overall, I don't have any concerns when I see his name as referee (maybe apart from our defeat at Leeds three years ago) - but it is about time that record we have started to improve.

He will be assisted by Gary Young (Bedfordshire) and Chris Francis (Cambridgeshire) with fourth official duties in the hands of John Farries (Oxfordshire).
