Bates is in charge

Sometimes it is through no fault of his own but there is usually something to remember the games by when referee Tony Bates has been at the Turf.

He has taken charge of three Turf Moor games in the past and the first of these was the York City home game of 1997/98 when Stan virtually sacked four players after the game. It is believed that Stan actually asked him if he could replace four players with three at half time and was told no.

It was some tome before he returned and when he did it was Paul Gascoigne’s debut against Bradford City and he just couldn’t wait to collect his name for his yellow card list, booking him for the only foul he conceded all game.

Last season he paid his last visit to the Turf on the opening day of the season and sent off Arthur Gnohere for a head butt that to this day the Clarets defender disputes. He has since refereed us away from home, at Forest towards the end of last season.

He has got off to a reasonably quiet start this season and handed out just 28 yellow cards in 11 games and just a single red card that went to Brighton’s Nathan Jones in their Carling Cup victory over Bristol Rovers.

Last season in 40 games there were 105 yellow cards and only two red cards and his distribution of cards shows not too many more away team players than home team players.

In the last two weeks we have had two excellent referees away from home and the indications are that at least we won’t have a card happy referee tomorrow. And don’t expect Stan to sack four players either, we don’t have enough of them now to do that.

He will be assisted tomorrow by Andy Haines (Tyne & Wear) and Martin Robinson (County Durham).
