Bates back at the Turf

Last updated : 26 February 2008 By Tony Scholes
That Plymouth game stands out in all of his Burnley games, it remains the only one of eleven that we've won, but having said that we've only had cause for concern in a couple of those games regarding his performance.

The poor one in particular was at Elland Road in 2005/06 when he seemed to have donned the white shirt for long spells in the second half, but in contrast when he refereed Burnley the last time he had an excellent game. That was in our first away game of this season and his 'Rate the Ref' rating of 83.8 is the fourth best this season.

Looking back he's had some significant Burnley games. There was the infamous home defeat against York after which Stan Ternent sacked four players, and he was the referee itching to yellow card Paul Gascoigne on his Burnley debut.

He was also the referee when we incredibly banned away fans from the Millwall game and was in the middle the last time a Burnley team conceded four goals, and that was against tonight's opposition Coventry City.

If there is a general concern with this referee then it is his desire to lean somewhat towards the home team and his yellow cards this season yet again suggest that. In 27 games this season the yellow card has come out of his pocket on 68 occasions, around two and a half per game, but only 18 of those cards have gone to home team players with 50 to away team players.

He's also sent off two players, one home and one away. The home player sent off was Danny Mills in Charlton's 1-1 home draw against Hull just before Christmas. It was a decision that couldn't be questioned and brought Mills' time at Charlton to an end.

With Bates we shouldn't expect too much controversy, but history says we shouldn't prepare for a win, and that's something we really do need if we are to put any pressure on the top six.

The assistant referees will be Mark Astley (Gt Manchester) and William Smallwood (Cheshire) whilst fourth official duties will be in the hands of David Webb (Co Durham).
