Bates at Coventry

Last updated : 29 April 2005 By Tony Scholes

He was at the Turf back in October when we took on a Millwall side that was thankfully without Dennis Wise who chose to spend the whole 90 minutes on the touchline.

There was just one booking per side (ours was Dean West) and Bates did well and allowed the players to get on with playing unlike some we have seen recently.

He is under the three yellow cards per game this season which is now considered to be well below average. He has handed out 74 yellow cards and 2 red cards in 27 games.

We do need to beware though, he does tend to favour the home side with the cards. Only 29 of those yellow cards have gone to home team players with 45 to away team players and the two red cards have also gone the way of the visitors.

Brighton’s Nathan Jones was sent off in a 1-0 win at Bristol Rovers in the Carling Cup as did Lee Fowler of Huddersfield as they crashed 6-2 at Scunthorpe.

He hasn’t kept his cards in his pocket throughout a match this season, the last time he did that was just over a year ago when Crewe met Wycombe in a 2nd Division fixture.

He will be assisted tomorrow by Ian Harris from Cornwall and Martin Harris from Lincolncshire.
