Bally takes over at Stadium of Light

The early news seemed to be greeted with some relief on Wearside, McCarthy had won just two and drawn four from thirty-seven Premiership games in charge and they have been rooted to the bottom of the Premiership for virtually all of the season.

But the later news, that Kevin Ball will be in charge for the remainder of the season, will definitely have met with the approval of the Sunderland fans, so popular is he up there.

Denis Smith, now with Wrexham, was the manager who signed Bally and he was a player there for ten years. Spells with Fulham and the Clarets followed and it was with us that his playing career came to an end after he was released at the end of the 2001/02 season. His last game was the home game against Coventry when one more goal would have seen us into the play offs.

He returned to the Stadium of Light to coach alongside Howard Wilkinson and Steve Cotterill during the 2002/03 season but that changed following the appointment of McCarthy when he was given a role with the academy and recently he’s been looking after the Under-18 team.

Now Bally will be the manager for the remaining games of this season. There’s no way he’s going to turn things round enough to prevent them being relegated, but he’ll certainly have the support of the fans.
