Baggies take last place

The Hawthorns - the Clarets will be back there next season

The arrogant little man finally got his job done in the play off final with a goal from Stephen Pearson, his first for the club since his £750,000 January move from Celtic, whilst the closest West Brom came was a Kevin Phillips shot that hit the bar.

West Brom had most of the play, Stephen Bywater was the busier of the two goalkeepers, but they failed to score for only the third time in the last thirty-four games. Had they won history would have been created with all three sides relegated from the Premiership going straight back up.

Nine years ago two out of three went up with the other missing out in the play off final. Then it was Sunderland and they too had Phillips in their side. On that occasion they lost on penalties after that classic 4-4 draw against Charlton.

For Derby it is a return to the Premiership after a five year absence, for West Brom they will surely be one of the bookmaker's favourites again next season, although some of their fans were far from happy this afternoon and there were chants of 'Mowbray Out!' at the end of the game.
