Babb no – Flitcroft would be fantastic

Phil Babb - decided to retire
Stan was considered to be a manager who kept things very close to his chest when it came to transfers and talks with players and that seems even more so with the new man in charge.

He has dismissed the speculation that was in one Sunday newspaper linking the Clarets with both Blackburn midfielder Garry Flitcroft and young Manchester United midfielder Chris Eagles.

Cotterill told the Burnley Express, “I would love to have Garry Flitcroft to be honest. I don’t know where the link came from - and it certainly hasn't come from us -but he would be absolutely fantastic for us.

"He could be out of our reach, but from our side of the fence, I would love him here - he would be right up our alley. We will just have to monitor that situation and see if anything surfaces."

So there have been no discussions with Flitcroft and there is no doubt that is the case with Eagles. He added, “As regards Chris Eagles, if I was going to ask for him on a long loan, I would contact Sir Alex Ferguson, without going through the papers.

"On that account, I haven't seen enough of Chris, but if I had, I would contact Sir Alex, rather than have him read about it in the papers. As far as I'm concerned, it's all speculation."

However, one player we have tried to sign is former Republic of Ireland international Phil Babb who was released by Sunderland at the end of last season.

Babb was a regular in the Sunderland side last season and played in their play off matches. His last league appearance came at the Turf for the Mackems on the last day of the season.

A Peter Reid signing for Sunderland he worked for Steve Cotterill at Sunderland during the 2002/03 season and he was the player he targeted over the weekend.

He won’t be coming though, after initial talks looked promising the player made a last minute decision to retire.
