Away in the Carling Cup

Last updated : 08 July 2004 By Tony Scholes

It’s Bury in the Carling Cup and if past results are anything to go by it should mean goals galore when the two sides meet at Gigg Lane on either 24th or 25th August.

This will be the fourth meeting between the two sides in this competition and the three previous occasions, all two legged affairs, have seen a total of thirty goals scored. That is five per match.

The first of these was in 1982/83 when we won 5-3 at Gigg Lane and followed that up with a 3-1 second leg win on the Turf.

Three years later a Martin Dobson inspired Bury responded to our 2-1 win on the Turf with an incredible 5-3 win in the second leg and then just six years ago we lost 4-1 on the Turf after a 1-1 draw at Bury.

This time it is just one leg, and as was the case in all rounds last season we have been drawn to play away from home.
