Ashley Barnes will remember Pawson

Last updated : 22 August 2014 By Tony Scholes

Barnes wasn't playing for us back in December 2011 but with less than 12 minutes gone in our away game at Brighton he was the second player to be sent off, following his team mate Romain Vincelot who had gone in just the sixth minute.

His only previous Burnley game was a Carling Cup tie against Burton earlier that season when he wrongly awarded us a penalty that helped turn the game n our favour, but in the following season it was the farcical disallowing of a Junior Stanislas goal against Millwall just as the players were about to restart.

There is just one more Burnley game to add and that was the home draw against Blackburn last season when he rightly sent off Lee Williamson at the end of the game.

It's a record that shows him as being one of only two current Premier League referees with a rating of under 50 per cent in Rate the Ref. He's currently 16th of 17 in the league with a rating of 48.74 out of 10.

Pawson, who is associated with the Sheffield and Hallamshire County FA, became a Football League referee in 2008 with his first game a 0-0 draw between Grimsby and Rochdale at Blundell Park.

His Premier League debut was at the ground where he will referee tomorrow, the Liberty Stadium. That was in March 2013 when he refereed Swansea's 1-0 home win against Newcastle.

It was his only Premier League game that season before being appointed to the select group for last season when he refereed a further ten top flight games. He sent off four players last season but none of them were outside of the Football League.

His 2014/15 season started with Hull's 1-0 win at QPR last Saturday when he made one of the worst decisions of the weekend in awarding a penalty to QPR for handball against James Chester. Thankfully for him, former Claret Charlie Austin saw his spot kick saved.

Pawson doesn't over use his cards, other than, it seems, in Burnley games. There were three yellows in the game last week, Richard Dunne from QPR and Hull's Curtis Davies and Nikica Jelavic.

He's not one of the established Premier League referees and we've seen some very poor games from him previously. Hopefully he'll give us a performance every bit as good as Michael Oliver's last Monday.

The assistant referees tomorrow are Dave Bryan (Lincolnshire) and Scott Ledger (South Yorkshire). The fourth official is Neil Swarbrick (Lancashire) who refereed our 1-0 win at Barnsley last season.
