Around One – Not any longer

Back to Elland Road for the first time in 22 years
It was West Ham last year, our first league meeting for 24 years, and next season it will be our first league encounters with Leeds for 22 years. The club who change managers, change owners and sell players more often than the Clarets play matches have joined us in ‘The Championship’ having been relegated with Wolves and Leicester.

It is refreshing to see Leicester back down, for one thing there’s a ground we can win on and not only that everyone remembers how they cheated financially during their last promotion campaign with their move into administration.

Wolves spent millions getting into the Premiership but their stay lasted just one year although they will come back down stronger than they went up and like West Brom before them will be favourites for a quick return.

Top Scottish club Plymouth Argyle, King Arthur’s QPR and Brighton arrive from the old Division Two to replace relegated Walsall, BRBC (yes he is still there) and the Pariahs of Franchise.

There’s been limited transfer activity so far with Plymouth and Leeds leading the way. A new fast road has been built from north of the border down to Devon.

Yesterday Argyle completed the signing of Stevie Crawford from Dunfermline and he becomes the eleventh player at Home Park to join from Scottish League football to play for Bobby Williamson.

Stevie Crawford - Plymouth's latest signing from Scotland
Since the end of last season they have already added the signings of Stephen Milne (Dundee), Lee Makel (Livingston), Keith Lasley (Motherwell) and Matthias Doumbe (Hibs) prior to Crawford’s arrival yesterday.

There has been one departure, that of assistant manager Kevin Summerfield who has moved along the south coast to join former manager Paul Sturrock at Southampton.

Over the Pennines in Leeds they used to have Jonathan Woodgate, Rio Ferdinand, Lee Bowyer, Alan Smith, Robbie Fowler, Harry Kewell, Olivier Dacourt, Michael Bridges, Nigel Martyn and Paul Robinson.

It is all change though. Kevin Blackwell has taken over as manager and his first signing was Sam Ellis who has become his assistant and they are already rebuilding the squad. Yesterday they signed Coventry striker Julian Joachim and defender Paul Butler from Wolves.

This follows on from the capture of Manchester United’s Danny Pugh who came free in the package that saw Smith move to Old Trafford. They are also keen to sign Barry Hayles who is available on a free transfer at Fulham and QPR’s Clark Carlisle.

Leeds are not the only club to sign a player from Manchester United. Dario G has completed the transfer of goalkeeper Ben Williams from Old Trafford and also added a second player to his squad with Andy White joining from Mansfield.

Dario applauded the attitude of White’s agent. Crewe don’t negotiate, they make and offer and it is take it or leave it.

Up in the north east Carl Robinson is now a Sunderland player. He has joined them permanently from Portsmouth after ending last season at the Stadium of Light on loan. Mick McCarthy has also signed Stephen Elliott from KKMC.

Walsall keeper James Walker has reluctantly left the Bescot Stadium and signed for Alan Pardew at West Ham where he will challenge former Burnley target Stephen Bywater for the number one jersey.

Dion Dublin - agreed to Leicester move
Leicester have won the race for Dion Dublin as they frantically look to replace all the players who are leaving. They have also announced the signing of Gareth Williams from Forest. However, Forest say he hasn’t gone and if Leicester do want to sign him then they will be demanding between three and five million for him.

There has been transfer business between the clubs. Andy Impey and Alan Rogers, both Kinnear loan signings, have now joined Forest permanently.

Forest also want Kris Commons who is still to sign a new deal at Stoke. The youngster was first given an opportunity at the Britannia Stadium by Steve Cotterill but then suffered a serious injury.

Derby have signed Dane Morten Bisgaard (pronounced Bish-Gore) from FC Copenhagen whilst Jason De Vos has moved from Wigan to Ipswich.

Long Ball Joe is already whinging about finances down at Portman Road and has said that if offers come in for Marcus Bent and/or Pablo Counago then they will have to seriously consider them.

Royle should take a look at what the situation would have been had they not wiped out massive debts just over a year ago via administration before he opens his mouth.

There are no other signings to report but Wigan are close to signing Torquay striker David Graham although they have had an offer for former Claret Andy Todd turned down.

Neil Warnock is still interested in signing Izale McLeod from Derby but says he is in no rush and will have a look around first to see who else is available.

Sheffield United meanwhile have been fined £80,000 for failing to control their players. I do have some sympathy; it came in a match against Millwall who were also fined the same amount.

As we found to our cost it is very difficult keeping control against Millwall with the antics of Wise and his team.

Hull? You have to be joking
It is all happening at Millmoor. Work has started in converting the Tivoli (home) End to seating whilst they are making more space available in the away team dressing room by removing the jacuzzi. The Sinister One Glenn Roeder will be pleased.

Neil Freeman has won his battle for control of the club and already Ronnie Moore, yes he is still there, is looking to bring some big names in. The likes of Jody Morris, Robbie Stockdale and Danny Cadamarteri have all been linked with Rotherham.

They are also set to make a formal complaint following an illegal approach for manager Moore. No it is not Burnley who were, along with Leeds, granted permission. The apparent guilty club are Hull who thought they might be looking for a new manager to replace Legend Peter Taylor.

It’s all happening at Deepdale, season ticket sales are already in the hundreds. The club though have shut down the message board on the official web site. They said many of the posts were racist and they feared litigation.

They are not the first club to do this. It is some time since there was a board on the Burnley site and Forest have also taken the same action according to Preston.

Brighton have the best fans in the country – they have won the Football Supporters Federation Services to Supporters Award. It is deserved; they have had a hell of a lot to put up with.

They had their ground sold from under them, had to move to Gillingham (and that is no joke) and are now struggling to get permission to build a new ground.

And we think we have it difficult some times.

Finally, and still with supporters, it is well done to the fans at Sunderland. He played for Newcastle but was known as ‘The Messiah’ on Wearside. It was Bob Stokoe who led Sunderland to their FA Cup success in 1973.

He was Stan Ternent’s mentor and he gave Stan his first coaching roles at Sunderland and Blackpool.

The Mackems wanted a lasting memorial for him and launched a ‘Statue for Stokoe’ campaign. They needed £50,000 and have already raised £45,000. Well done to you.

That’s it for now around the Championship – we’ll be back soon.
