Around One – Good night for Clarets

Neil Shipperley - scored for Palace at Rotherham
It seemed as if three away wins were too much to ask for but that’s just what we got as everything went our way.

At Millmoor we had some early good news with Palace two up within the first half hour with goals from Julian Gray and Neil Shipperley but it could have been bad news with Palace on-loan keeper Nico Vaesen making a magnificent save with only seconds gone.

Palace were much the better side overall and could have extended their lead as they found form after a poor run of results. But they were left hanging on after Michael Proctor pulled one back with five minutes left.

Vaesen finished the game as he started it with another brilliant stop to keep out what looked like a Proctor equaliser.

Ronnie Moore admitted that his side lost it in the first half when they were poor but said that he still believes that any side to reach 50 points will be safe.

Down in Kent we were thankful to Wigan who gave Gillingham something of a hammering and came away with a 3-0 win. It was never Gillingham’s night and they turned in their worst performance of the season.

Assistant boss Wayne Jones admitted: "It's not chins on the chest time just yet and we won't be hoisting the white flag.

"The manager tore into the players both at half-time and again at the end because quite frankly our performance was not good enough."

Nobody moves down the bottom, we remain above Gillingham on goal difference and two points behind Rotherham but now have a home game in hand on both of them.

There was wonderful news in the other Division One game tonight as 3rd place Sunderland won the prize for hammering in the final nail in the Franchise coffin. Although it was bad news recently when the creditors failed to force them into liquidation it is some consolation to know that they are finally confirmed as the first relegated club this season, and with seven games still to play.

I’m sure they will be celebrating in Merton tonight but all genuine football fans will be raising a glass tonight to toast the relegation of these Pariahs.

So after a miserable Saturday it has been a good day for the Clarets – hopefully we can now have a good Easter.
