Another quiet week in Division One

Danny Hay - Walsall's new signing from Leeds
The financial hardship brought about by the loss of the television money has taken a firm hold and not one penny has been spent this week in transfer fees. The only deal involving a First Division club and a transfer fee is the one that saw Ipswich defender Titus Bramble finally sign for Premiership Newcastle in a £5 million deal.

Even those clubs that have brought in new players this week have made room for them with departures. Watford followed the appointment of new manager Ray Lewington by signing Millwall's central defender Sean Dyche on a free transfer but they have countered that by releasing Dutch striker Nordin Wooter and paying up French defender Patrick Blondeau.

That's a pattern that has been repeated by Walsall boss Colin Lee. He has signed Leeds' New Zealand defender Danny Hay and Darren Bazeley from Wolves but released reserve team keeper Lee Harper and Freddy Biancalani. Wolves have also seen striker Cedric Roussel join RAEC Mons on a year's loan.

Sheffield United have signed a new striker, Laurens Ten Hevel from Dutch club Telstar. He has previously been with Barnsley and Northampton Town. It is one in, one out though at Bramall Lane and Laurent D'Jaffo has joined Aberdeen on a free transfer.

And that is just about it apart from Stoke letting Icelandic striker Rikhardur Dadason join Lillestrom on a free transfer.

I suspect the quiet to continue as clubs struggle to come to terms with the loss of income with news emerging from Turf Moor this weekend that there are unlikely to be any incoming transfers before the start of the season unless the television problems are resolved, and that seems unlikely at this time.

One transfer we forgot to mention last week was Michael Boulding moving from Grimsby Town to Aston Villa. The 26 year-old who tormented the Clarets in that crucial defeat at Blundell Park in April has moved to Villa Park on a Bosman free transfer.
