Another Premiership referee for Clarets

Last updated : 12 November 2004 By Tony Scholes

The last time Messias was at Turf Moor was almost two years and it was a very rare occasion indeed, a home win against Wolves. That was on Boxing Day 2002 but it was no season of goodwill as far as the referee was concerned.

There were suggestions that he had received a new yellow card as a Christmas present and wanted to show it off as eight players were booked.

It was a difficult afternoon for Messias though, for the first time the Football League had allocated three referees for one game and it took him a while before he realised he had to go along with the decisions of the other two, Paul Ince and Alex Rae, who were both wearing the colours of Wolves.

This season he is averaging over three yellow cards per game, to date he has handed out twenty-three in just seven games. Does he have an bias towards the home side, not half, only six of those cards have gone to home team players whilst seventeen have gone the way of away team players.

Notitngham
Forest
’s Andy Reid is one of those six, Messias carded him in their 2-1 home win against West Ham back in September but also cautioned three West Ham players.

That suggests the Forest players just might have to be that little more careful than our players tomorrow.

He will be assisted by Phil Bramley (West Yorkshire) and Bob Pollock (Merseyside).
