Another one goes as Stan reaches eighth

George Burley - out at Ispwich after almost eight years
Today saw the third club in the First Division say farewell to its manager as Ipswich Town sacked George Burley. It would have been difficult to imagine at the start of the season that he would be close to leaving Portman Road.

But the season hasn't started well and the shock defeat at Grimsby in midweek has proved to be the final straw for them.

Burley will always be associated with the Tractor Boys having played for them for many years, he made his debut for them at Turf Moor, and has been manager for almost eight years.

Coach Tony Mowbray will take over on a temporary basis and the club have already said that he is a potential candidate for the job on a permanent basis. He is certain to be in charge when the Clarets visit Portman Road in just under a fortnight, our first visit in over 27 years.

Ipswich have become the fifth club in six days to lose their manager for a variety of reasons as the crazy side of football finally takes over again.

This week's changes have also seen Stan move up the list of longest serving league managers and he has now reached the lofty position of eighth with Peter Reid and George Burley having gone.

The only seven with longer unbroken service with a league club are now Dario Gradi, Alex Ferguson, Alan Curbishley, Barry Fry, former Claret Brian Laws, Arsene Wenger, and Ronnie Moore.
