Another former Claret set for manager's job

Steve Davis, a familiar Burnley name, is currently in temporary charge of Northwich Victoria who have just ended the season in fourteenth place in the Nationwide Conference.

Davis has been at Northwich for three years after having played for Oxford United in the 1999/2000 season. He signed initially as a player but moved onto the coaching side when Jimmy Quinn took over as manager.

After assisting Quinn for a period he has since been in charge of the youth set up and also the Community programme at the Vics.

But former Northern Ireland international Quinn has replaced Kevin Ratcliffe at Shrewsbury as they themselves face Conference football next season and Northwich have put Davis in temporary charge for a week until a permanent appointment is made.

He could be that permanent appointment and chairman Dave Stone said, "We need to make sure he has somebody with him who knows non-league football in the region.

"That does not mean to say he has got the job, but he has impressed everybody at the club with his commitment and ability with the youth and community programmes and is respected by the players.

"We know now we would not be far off if we appointed him, but we are drawing up a shortlist at the weekend and will interview six of them next week. Of course, Steve will be among them."

Burnley signed Davis from Crewe in 1987 for £15,000 after an initial loan period and he remained with the Clarets for almost four years before moving on to Barnsley in the summer of 1991 for £180,000. He was replaced in the centre of the Burnley defence by the next Steve Davis who arrived from Southampton.

He was with the Tykes for seven years before moving on to York and then Oxford, playing against the Clarets for both those clubs. His last Football League game was for Oxford in 2000, he played just short of 450 Football League games in his career.
