And another Premier League referee

Last updated : 07 March 2008 By Tony Scholes
Webb is now one of the country's top officials but he's never really had the best of games when refereeing Burnley. His first Burnley game was the home draw with Millwall in the 2002/03 season and he had something of a nightmare and he didn't fare any better in the following season when he took charge of the FA Cup tie between the two sides at the Den.

Did I say take charge? Not quite, that was the afternoon he allowed Dennis Wise to make all the decisions and how on earth he wasn't sent off that day is anyone's guess. He was eventually booked but the red card was ridiculously reserved for Paul Weller.

However, he is considered to be just about the best we've got now and does get some of the big games in the Premier League and he's also refereed four Champions League games this season.

He's been in the middle 30 times and in those games has handed out 95 yellow cards and two red cards. Of those 41 have gone to home team players and 54 to away team players. Until two weeks ago there hadn't been any red cards but then he sent off Fulham's Leon Andreasen in their 1-0 home defeat against West Ham and then this week dismissed Jorge Fucile of Porto as they went out of the Champions League to Shalke.

His only other Football League game this season was Crystal Palace's 3-0 win at Wolves in January. We could do with something similar to that day, a 3-0 away win and no cards.

The assistant referees at Stoke will be Dave Bryan (Lincolnshire) and John Stokes (Wirral) with fourth official duties in the hands of Football League referee Stuart Attwell (Warwickshire).
