The statement from Stoke states clearly that they have not had any contact with any other club and they are mystefied at the news of Cotterill's departure.
With only the Sunderland job currently vacant it looks as though he is on his way to the Stadium of Light and it is suggested that he will be working with former Leeds boss Howard Wilkinson. Cotterill will be the new manager with Wilkinson as Director of Football.
Clubs get a lot of stick, and rightly so, for the constant chopping and changing of managers whilst Burnley have shown in the last decade or so that continuity achieves more.
It is difficult sometimes though to criticise the clubs when managers walk out in the way Cotterill has just done and the way Steve Bruce did last year. Bruce by the way is surprisingly still at Birmingham.
In a Bruce/Francis style twist Adrian Heath has already been tipped as favourite for the job at Stoke to work with Peter Reid.
NB: Steve Cotterill has subsequently been appointed as Assistant Manager at Sunderland with Howard Wilkinson appointed as Manager.
