Alexander ends forty year wait

On the 21st October 1967 Willie Morgan won the first of his 21 Scotland caps in a 1-0 Home International defeat against Northern Ireland in Belfast. It was his only cap prior to him leaving for Manchester United and until tonight no Burnley player has played for Scotland since.

Alexander's appearance tonight is only the ninth by Burnley players. Jock Aird played four times in the 1950s, goalkeeper Adam Blacklaw made three appearances in the 1960s and then there was Morgan's solitary appearance.

It was an afternoon watching from the subs bench as they beat Lithuania 3-1 on Saturday, but tonight he came in for former loan player James McEveley and played his part in a remarkable 1-0 win at the Parc des Prince in Paris with a sensational winner from James McFadden.

He certainly had better luck than our Irish contingent. Kyle Lafferty was left out of Nigel Worthington's team against Iceland in Reykjavik and that left Michael Duff as the only starter. Joey Gudjonsson was missing from the Iceland side because of a second yellow card.

Iceland were in front early but the Irish fought back to equalise from the penalty spot. Luck wasn't on their side tonight and the home side went on to win it with a stoppage time own goal from Keith Gillespie. Steve Jones got on for the last few minutes, but twice gave the ball away in the build up to the winner. Worthington made just two changes during the game and Kyle wasn't used.

Besart Berisha missed Albania's game against Holland through injury and they were very unfortunate to lose, Ruud Van Nistelrooy scoring the only goal of the game in stoppage time.
