Adie's back

Randall joined the Clarets in December 1991 during that fantastic start Mullen had as manager, costing us £40,000 from Aldershot, a side who wouldn’t even be able to complete their fixtures.

He had to bide his time and his debut, as a substitute, coincided with our first defeat since the change of manager against Rotherham on Boxing Day. He was in and out for much of the remainder of the season, scoring a couple of goals against Gillingham and Cardiff.

It was the 1993/49 season when he finally established himself as a regular in the side but despite having played in 37 of the league games that season he was left out of the play off squad altogether as we beat Plymouth and Stockport to reach Division One.

That brought for Randall his best ever season in a Burnley shirt, the higher level suited him and he was close to winning the player of the year awards. His good form continued into the following season, after relegation, but he was suddenly sold two days after Christmas to York for £140,000. In total he made 148 appearances for the Clarets, scoring 13 goals.

His stay at Bootham Crescent was a short one, just under a year before he returned to the North West when he joined Stan Ternent’s team at Bury. He never featured much at Gigg Lane and left them at the end of the 1998/99 season and moved into non-league football.

Still only 36 he returns to the Turf tomorrow where he’s sure to get a good reception, he was a player who was always more popular with the fans than perhaps he was with the management.
