He suffered a bad injury shortly afterwards and was out for almost a year. On his return he was failed to get back into the Birmingham side and initially had a short unsuccessful loan spell at Oldham.
In the summer of 2002 he rejoined his former Birmingham boss Mr. Misery at Crystal Palace with Burnley once again supposedly in the running for his signature. Things didn’t work out too well for him at Palace, he was unpopular with the Selhurst Park crowd and scored just 5 goals in 39 appearances before being released.
This saw him move onto Coventry City as part of Gary McAllister’s rebuilding programme but things haven’t gone well for him and he has scored just twice in 23 league appearance. The West Midlands club have told the 28-year-old Nigerian striker that he is free to leave either permanently or on a loan deal.
New Coventry manager Eric Black said: "'I’ve spoken to Dele and he will be allowed to leave the Club if he gets an opportunity.
"I think he is a great lad and as honest a footballer as I’ve ever come across. He’s definitely got attributes but I feel Dele has reached a bit of a crossroads and needs something to change.
"He’s obviously not become a fans’ favourite which may have culminated in a lack of confidence," added Black. "We’ve tried to rebuild it and I think he has shown bits of form, but it has now come to a stage where he needs to break it and go to play somewhere else."
At least one national newspaper has linked him with Burnley but it looks very unlikely given the last three years that we would be interested in signing him any longer.
