Having played for his country at schoolboy level, Adam went on to play three times for his country at full international level and in doing so became only the second Burnley player to be capped by the Scots after Jock Aird.

All three of those games were played outside Scotland. His debut was against Norway in Bergen and he followed that by lining up against Spain in Real Madrid's Bernebau Stadium.

His final appearance was in the San Paolo in Naples just over a year before he became embroiled in the after match troubles when Burnley played there in the Fairs Cup.

On Tuesday of this week he, accompanied by his wife Sheila and members of the Blacklaw family, he travelled to Hampden Park to receive a commemorative cap to acknowledge those appearances. Prior to 1975 only players who had played in Home Internationals or World Cup Finals qualified for a cap.

On receiving his cap from current Scottish manager George Burley and chief executive Gordon Smith, Adam told the Scottish FA: "I've waited a very long time to get this. My family were my biggest supporters and are very proud of my achievements in the game so I am so glad they were here with me to witness this.

"I had a good career down South but my proudest memory is turning out for Scotland and I am so grateful I now have this cap to show for it.

"My family tried to arrange this for my 60th birthday and we weren't successful but we are very grateful to the Scottish FA for arranging this now and I'm a very happy man going home to Burnley with my cap."
