A Sunderland born striker called Noble

Our last Sunderland born Noble

Back in 1973 it was Peter Noble who arrived at Turf Moor as our only summer signing following promotion to the First Division. The self confessed Mackem was never given the opportunity to play for the club he supports and it was Swindon we signed him from after he'd previously been with Sunderland's fierce rivals Newcastle.

He didn't turn out too badly. He played for Burnley for over six seasons, making 301 appearances. He captained the side and was one of the most popular players with the fans during his time at Turf Moor.

Now, according to the Sunderland Echo's Graeme Anderson, Ryan Noble is making the same journey to Burnley. Unlike Peter he has played for Sunderland and it is Sunderland he was with until his release at the end of last season.

The 22-year-old made only five league appearances for his home town club, all as a substitute, but has played league football in loan spells with Derby and Hartlepool, making a Turf Moor appearance for Derby, replacing Theo Robinson early in the second half of the 0-0 draw in January 2012.

According to Anderson, Noble has signed a short term deal with the Clarets but this, as yet, has not been confirmed by the club.
