A fifth Burnley game for referee Taylor

Last updated : 19 September 2014 By Tony Scholes

That game at Hull should have been refereed by Mike Jones but he was withdrawn at the eleventh hour through illness with Taylor stepping in.

I can't comment on his performance that day; I missed the fixture through illness as we came from two behind to win 3-2 when David Edgar scored a brace and Jay Rodriguez got the winner, but in two of his three previous Burnley games he had nightmares.

At Bramall Lane in our 2008/09 promotion season he had a shocker, with the worst decision of the lot coming when he awarded a penalty when Billy Sharp fell over nothing and he penalised Brian Jensen.

In his next Burnley game, a 1-1 home draw against Southampton, he was even worse. On that occasion he seemed to just miss everything that was going on.

Now aged 35, he first refereed in the Football League in 2006/07, his first game being a League Two clash between Wrexham and Peterborough. Despite a long list of controversial games he moved onwards and upwards and in February 2010 a Fulham v Portsmouth fixture was his first in the Premier League.

Promotion to the select group game that summer and he's now become a Premier League regular although he continues far too often to make the headlines, even as recently as last week when he allowed Everton's Steven Naismith to get away with kicking out at Craig Dawson in their win against West Brom.

He's refereed four games this season and all four have been in the Premier League. In those four games there have been 13 yellow cards, five of which have gone to home team players and eight to away team players.

There were five in that last game. They were Andre Wisdom and Craig Gardner (West Brom) and  Steven Naismith, James McCarthy and Muhamed Besic  (Everton).

Taylor currently sits 10th of 17 in the Premier League Rate the Ref Table with a rating of 67.28 out of 100.

The assistant referees are Gary Beswick (County Durham) and D Bryan (Lincolnshire). The fourth official is Lee Mason (Bolton) whose last Burnley game was the 1-1 home draw against Blackburn in December 2012.
