A day of firsts for Alexander

Not only was it his first penalty but earlier he had scored his first away goal for Burnley, it was also the first time he'd scored twice in a game for us and he's also won his first ever Clarets Mad Man of the Match Award.

It was 2004 the last time he scored twice in a game. That was for Preston in a 3-0 win over Derby but since joining the Clarets he's never picked up one of our man of the matches but this time he's done the double and won the player ratings as well.

It wasn't just the two goals, to even suggest that would be unfair. He's been in excellent form since moving into the midfield role and this was another top performance from him and the fans have certainly voted that way.

He polled 48% of the vote for the man of the match and that was almost double the 25.3% claimed by debutant Steven Thompson who took second place. Robbie Blake was on the pitch for just over half an hour but that half an hour was enough to win him 4.8% of the vote and give him third place.

Both Alexander and Blake were in the top three of the player ratings too. Alexander was a clear winner with the biggest rating so far this season of 8.39 out of 10 and he was ahead of Robbie whose 7.87 rating gave him second place. Chris McCann, who had such a good second half, was third with a rating of 7.78 out of 10.

Alexander's points have taken him into second place in our table for the player of the season, some turnaround for a player who was one of those targeted as the season got off to a depressing start.
