Youth development - the way forward for our club

Last updated : 27 June 2008 By Tony Scholes
We've always been supportive. A few years ago we helped boost the attendances for a couple of youth cup games in a joint venture with the club and in the last two years we have set about raising money for them via our Clarets Mad Youth Foundation.

Today both Clarets Mad and the club have some positive news. We, on this site, are currently holding a Golden Goal sweep for Sunday's European Final. And for anyone wishing to join there are still places available at £5 each - please see the message board banner for details.

That sweep will take our fundraising past the £25,000 figure, and that is something we are all very proud of. Almost £20,000 has already been used by the club but we'll soon be holding discussions with them on how best to utilise the next £5,000. We are also hoping to take that total past £30,000 in the next year.

This week the club strengthened their commitment to youth development with the news of the £2 million investment at the Gawthorpe training ground. This really is vital and will help the club attract and then develop the youngsters over the coming years.

To add to that announcement, the club today released a video on their Clarets World service promoting youth development. It includes interviews with Vince Overson, who heads the operation, and also with coaches John Francis and Ash Hoskin who like Vince are ex-Clarets.

It really is a video worth watching, and for those without a Clarets World subscription we have made it possible by uploading the ten minute video onto Youtube. Please take time to view it, it is well worth it and you might spot a message board member or two coming up in the credits at the end.

It is the way forward for our club, to continue to develop young footballers who can go on to play in the first team, and as we've seen with a couple of them in the last three years to bring some much needed money to the club.

We'll continue to support youth development here at Clarets Mad to the best of our ability - for now click HERE to see the club's youth development video.
