Rishton Golf Club goes Mad

I somehow never though that Clarets Mad would ever take over an entire golf course for the afternoon but that's exactly what happened with forty keen golfers, along with some spectators and caddies, teeing off in a shotgun start at 1:00 p.m.

Golf courses are not places I frequent too often so I think I can be excused wearing a Burnley shirt (I was asked to wear a shirt with a collar and the 2006/07 shirt does have one), track suit bottoms and committing the biggest sin of all in answering my mobile phone, as I trooped round with one of the teams for the first nine holes.

“Golf is a good walk spoiled,” said Mark Twain but I enjoyed my stroll around the course and certainly those taking part looked to be enjoying the golf and taking the competition seriously, golfers never do otherwise. Even the forecast rain stayed away and the last players were coming off the course just as the weather finally broke, heading for the club house for some drinks, the buffet and the presentations.

Burnley Football Club have been the winners today without a doubt, we've raised around £700 for Year of the Youth and it was a club team, comprising PR Man Daz Bentley, Centre of Excellence coaches Brian Taylor and the quiet Andy Farrell along with youth team coach Terry Pashley, who won the overall competition.

The individual prize went to Football League assistant referee Neil Yates There was no blowing of a fox40 as he collected his prize but those in his foursome revealed that he'd used a red card to mark his scores. The longest drive and nearest to the pin awards were won by brothers Michael and Ashley Scott.

A raffle and an auction added to the fund and the whole afternoon came to an end with Burnley FC's Head of Youth Development Vince Overson, not a keen golfer himself, thanking everyone for their continued support.

I'd like to thank all those who were there today for making it such a good afternoon, but in particular to Phil and Tony who worked so hard and so well in putting the whole event together.

And for those who think Rishton is in enemy territory – I can tell you it was very much Claret & Blue this afternoon.
