Clarets Mad Youth Foundation - We're five years old

Last updated : 16 March 2011 By Tony Scholes
A re-name to the Clarets Mad Youth Foundation came a year later and today, five years on, we have raised in excess of £43,300 for the youth department at Turf Moor.

That money has helped them bring in technical equipment, cameras to film games, much needed equipment at Gawthorpe and we've also helped funded development centres and sponsored some of the teams in travelling to tournaments in Europe.

The money has been raised in a variety of ways, through dinners, golf days, pool competitions, football matches and a race night, via fantasy games and sweepstakes run on the Clarets Mad message board including a very popular 'First Goal Sweep' that runs for every Burnley first team game.

Today will see the launch of a special 'FIVE PLAYERS FOR A FIVER' competition on the message board. For £5 you just need to name five Championship players you think will score goals this weekend. Half of that money will go in prizes with the other half split between the Youth Foundation and, on this occasion, the Gary Parkinson Trust Fund.

I'd like to take the opportunity to thank everyone who has been involved in any way during the last five years; to those who have helped with the events and of course to everyone who has made a contribution and has supported the events, games and sweepstakes.

Two days after the launch in 2006 the youth team were beaten 3-1 at Chester City. Included in that team was a young 16-year-old by the name of Jay Rodriguez. Hopefully our continued support will help find the next Jay for both Burnley and England.
