Defenders take awards

Last updated : 27 April 2005 By Tony Scholes

It was a full house in the company of Steve Cotterill, his back room staff and the full first team squad along with special guest Roger Eli who was a member of the last Burnley side to win a Championship thirteen years ago when the Fourth Division was won.

The only missing figure was Jeff Brown who should have been compere for the night, however Jeff is currently in hospital and everyone sent him their best wishes.

In recent years the awards have all gone to one player but this year five different players all collected Player of the Year awards although there is no doubt that two of them dominated.

Captain Frank Sinclair, Brian Jensen and Tony Grant all received awards but most of them went the way of our current central defensive duo of John McGreal and Gary Cahill.

As for Goal of the Season, Robbie certainly seems to be forgotten now and those groups who made such awards all went for Micah Hyde. I assume it was the goal he got in an FA Cup replay and not the one he scored on the opening day of the season.

Steve Cotterill was presented with an outstanding achievement award from all the groups and in his few words he heaped praise on his back room staff and said he had the best off the field team in football – he did mention the Lancashire rain though.

I’m sure all the Supporters Groups would wish to thank Steve, his back room team and all the players for supporting the big even of the year and there are also thanks to the Club photographer Steve Lockyer and actor Richard Moore.

Steve donated three superb signed, framed photographs of John McGreal, Gary Cahill and Micah Hyde that went under the auctioneer’s hammer along with the Burnley FC hat worn by Jarvis Skelton in Emmerdale, presented by its owner Richard Moore via Burnley Football Supporters Club.
