It's cup weekend again

Last updated : 22 October 2010 By Tony Scholes

Having started with Padiham, we've moved on through Staveley Miners Welfare, Parkgate and Warrington Town to Stalybridge Celtic who currently enjoy the status of Clarets Mad team in the competition.

Stalybridge Celtic won at Warrington Town in the last round to set themselves up with a home tie against Blue Square Bet North rivals Eastwood Town but both sides go into the game on the back of a defeat and having dropped into the bottom half of the league.

Celtic were somewhat unfortunate last week. They travelled to league leaders Boston United and played well but were beaten 1-0 with a bizarre goal when their former Doncaster and Wolves goalkeeper Jan Budtz was robbed of the ball outside his penalty box.

Tomorrow's opponents Eastwood had a disappointing day last weekend, beaten 2-0 at home by Blyth Spartans. It was their first defeat in six games.

Stalybridge Celtic have reached the Fourth Round Qualifying this season by beating Alfreton Town before seeing off Warrington Town two weeks ago. Eastwood Town's victims have been Stafford Rangers, a club who Burnley beat in the competition twenty years ago on the day Stan Collymore scored his first FA Cup goal (an own goal for the Clarets), and Matlock Town.

The winners of this time will be one of 32 non-league clubs going through to the First Round alongside the 48 Football League clubs.
